Just returned from a fantastic weekend at Beech Bend Raceway.\u00a0 Despite driving through off and on rain from Kansas City all the way to Bowling Green KY, the tow over was uneventful.\u00a0 My brother and sister-in-law drove down from Cincinnati.\u00a0 Great to see them.\u00a0 We indulged in much reminiscing.\u00a0 The venue and cars brought back memories of attending the NHRA Nationals in Indy when many of these cars were state-of-the-art competition machines.<\/p>\n
The period correct drag cars share the track with NHRA’s current nostalgia series Top Fuel and Funny Car classes.\u00a0 I was a bit skeptical about the “new-old” cars.\u00a0 But they are impressive.\u00a0 The diggers were running mid-5 second passes at over 250 MPH in the full quarter mile.\u00a0 First few pictures show the current nostalgia cars.<\/p>\n
Entry into the car show guaranteed preferred parking close to the race paddock.\u00a0 2,000+ cars in the show.<\/p>\n
While grabbing a cold beverage from the cooler in the Model A, we noticed a guy looking over the front of my car very intently.\u00a0 He looks up and says, “I built this car.”\u00a0 What?\u00a0 I knew my A had at least one owner in Kentucky.\u00a0 Turns out this guy, Ray Medlock, owns a radiator and hot rod shop in Richmond, KY.\u00a0 The previous owner brought the car to Ray (wrecked!) and he put it back together.\u00a0 Looking forward to another conversation with Ray and learning more about my A’s history.<\/p>\n
When in Bowling Green, one must go to the National Corvette Museum.\u00a0 I think it is a law.\u00a0 The last few pictures were obviously taken there.\u00a0 One picture shows the exact spot where the infamous sink hole swallowed and destroyed several Vettes.
